Dear Friends,
It was fun to hear about the many field trips students were taking this week.
The Sports and Society class had an outside speaker from the world of Sports Reporting, WTOP's long standing Sports Broadcaster, Frank Hanrahan.
The Immigration and Indigenous Studies class followed up a lesson on Cambodian Immigration in the 1970’s with a trip to a small privately owned donut store. Did you know pink boxes became associated with donuts because they were the cheapest boxes to buy? By the 1980's 90 percent of the donut shops in Southern California were owned by Cambodians who had fled genocide. Gerald Ford welcomed 50,000 refugees from Cambodia and made living spaces for them at Camp Pendleton.
World History traveled to a Buddhist Temple to explore the space, hear a presentation from the monks, and even practiced a meditation with them.
Coming up this week….
We welcome the Middle States Association Visiting Accreditation Team. Starting Monday, they will be observing classes and meeting with students, parents, board members, and Nora staff for three days. We look forward to their Oral Report on Wednesday at noon, which is a brief summary of their findings.
Students can let loose following the visit with Spirit Week and Homecoming! On Spirit Days, students dress according to themes set by the Student Government. See the calendar below for the this year’s theme wear.
Homecoming is a student government sponsored event at Nora School. There will be music, games, food and a bonfire. Students may dress up, or may arrive in more casual dress….be you!
Although we have classes on Tuesday, we do honor Veterans Day which celebrates all who served in the US Military, more than 19 million citizens. Veterans Day is not the same as Memorial Day and is meant to thank living veterans for their sacrifice. The first Veterans day was in 1919 to celebrate the end of World War I.
Peace,
Mara
