Frisbee, Prom, and Intersession Choices
Dear Friends,
We are bustling and preparing for the coming of Spring! We will be moving very quickly through to the end of the year, so please attend to dates and opportunities. We want everyone to get what they need.
Seniors! If you still need to complete a sport for your graduation requirement, Ultimate Frisbee is our final sport of the season. Practices begin on Tuesday. Everyone else is welcome to join the team too. This is our first foray into Frisbee, and we are excited learn together. We will be playing other schools with new frisbee teams too!
Intersession! Instead of daily classes, we go into a deep dive of an area of study from May 11-May 20. This week, students designate their top three choices so that we can divide the student body into each area. As students sign up for their choice of Intersession, (see details below) some are seeking help to determine the three choices that would work for them. Please go through the choices with each other and feel free to send any questions you may have to the lead teacher of specific intersessions (noted below). The school covers the cost of these activities for all students, though please continue to bring your own lunch.
Prom! Prom is coming up soon. All students are welcome to attend. There will be a live set of music, games and light food. Tickets are $25, sold during lunch by the Student Government Association.
Coming soon! Accepting entries to our Annual Photography Festival. (See our Facebook Event for details) This Festival is an opportunity for students all over the DMV to have their photographs exhibited at The Nora School and judged by professional photographers. The deadline for entry is April 19. Seize this fun opportunity or just join us on April 30 for the Exhibit, Workshops and Awards Ceremony.
Peace,
Mara
Intersession Choices
Biking and Hiking: Do you love outdoor adventure? Do you love being outside in nature? Does spending time out in the forest camping and biking sound like a blast to you?! In addition to long bike rides, there will also be hiking and other outdoor recreation!
Quilting-making: Students who enjoy sewing should look into being part of the fun and creativity that we can have in this intercession! We will take some time to look at some different quilt making processes and decide on a pattern for an ongoing Nora School quilt that will be hung on a wall. We will look at some videos, and go to a fabric store and pick out some different colors and fabrics to use. We will use sewing machines and hand sewing techniques to start a few blocks with the idea that every year this Nora School quilt can have another block added on to create a larger, growing quilt wall hanging. We will also look into the history of quilt making in our United States and in international cultures. Field trips will include a sewing store trip, and also a museum or two that display fabric textile arts.
Social Justice Travel: Indigenous Culture and American Historical Studies of South Dakota- Gain understanding of the many diverse people and cultures throughout the United States. Our goal is to have experiences on our travels and service experiences that give Nora School students the opportunity to learn more about the local history, environment and people who live in the lands that we travel through. We hope to expand our own thinking, challenge ourselves to see things differently.
Urban Studies: Join us on an 8 day exploration of cities. We will spend some time in the classroom, but most of our time will be spent exploring cities around us, such as D.C., Baltimore, Richmond, Annapolis or Philadelphia. Be prepared to take public transportation.
Zines: Join us for a deep dive into "zines"--small circulation magazines traditionally published the low-tech way, on photocopiers. They can be filled with your stories, articles, poetry, art, and anything else you can think of, and can be produced by small groups or individuals. We may produce a single zine or a bunch of tiny ones (known as "micro-zines"). Bring your enthusiasm and creativity!
Theater: Join us for a magical theater experience! This year's Intersession will be a mixture of scene work, improvisation, and even song! We may also explore monologues. The goal is to see a D.C. production of Our Town during this Intersession.
