Social Justice Travel and Intersession Programs
Dear Friends,
Come grab a cup of coffee and a donut at the Photography Festival tomorrow morning. You will be able to view a beautiful exhibit of photographs and see which photos are Award Winners. The Festival is open for viewing from 10:30-12:15 on Saturday. See you there!
Students met in the Intersession groups on Thursday to begin readying for our Intersession Programs. We hold Intersession from April 29-May 6. Instead of classes, students and teachers pursue a deep dive into an area of study for five to seven days. On May 8, students gather after morning classes to present a collaborative report of their experiential adventures. Each course is required as part of our curriculum and counts as a PASS/FAIL quarter credit on the transcript. All overnight accommodations, travel and entrance fees are covered by the school. Students are still responsible for their own lunches, but all other meals will be provided as necessary.
This year we are offering five Intersessions.
Social Justice Travel: A study of the Civil Rights Movement:
Tracing major moments in American history students will travel for eight days through Atlanta, Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery, Jackson, Memphis, Little Rock, and Tulsa. Through a study of history, art, music and literature, we will explore the vibrant path of transformation and path yet to come. (seven night overnight)
Nature, Humans and Art:
Aiming a critical lens at the concept of ‘Nature” by examining contemporary relationships with landscape, animals, and each other. Students will explore their relationship to horses through riding and through observation on Assateague Island; and their relationship to nature with visits to botanical gardens, national parks, and landscape paintings. (one night overnight)
Adventure: Climbing, Hiking and Canoeing:
Taking our Rock Climbing experience to the next level! Students will do outdoor climbing combined with other outdoor adventures. (two night overnight)
Creativity: Surrealism in Writing and Art:
Exploring surrealism through art and writing. This group will explore the roots of surrealism and look at how to tap into the unconscious and symbolic nature of surrealism in their own art and stories. (no overnight)
Self-Expression:
Exploring self-expression through fashion and content creation. Students will travel to different malls, outlets, and thrift stores in the area and document their experiences through blogging and social media. (no overnight, but may have late return on certain days)
This is the last week of the quarter. Please use this weekend to complete any missing assignments and get them turned in this week. We will take a Teacher Grading Day on March 27.
Wishing you a joyful St. Patrick’s Day.
Peace,
Mara
